It can be a daily struggle to live a normal life for many people who experience serious medical conditions such as seizures – like those you would see in cases of epilepsy. Medication doesn’t always work, with children and adults alike experiencing unfortunate side effects. In order to treat these conditions more effectively, many people are turning to Hemp CBD oil.

What is CBD?

CDB is also known as Cannabidiol, which is a cannabis compound. This compound contains the same medical benefits of cannabis, but does not give the user a “stoned” feeling. Instead, it actually counteracts THC and is non-psychoactive. This is why many people are turning to CBD to find relief from all sorts of pain without feeling lethargic after taking it.

A Recent Study By The AES Has Shown CBD To Be Effective For Combating The Symptoms Of Epilepsy

Many people are suspicious of CBD and are unsure of its effectiveness and dosage. There are 50 million people dealing with epilepsy though, prompting doctors to look into the usage of CBD to help stop seizures. Usual medication can cause unfortunate side effects, but is CBD any better?

Recently, the American Epilepsy Society (AES) has unveiled a study on the effects on CBD in combating the symptoms of epilepsy, finding it effective in both adults and children. In other words, it can be used to reduce the frequency and severity of seizures. Beginning in 2014, this study was conducted at epilepsy treatment centers nationwide, showing that patients receiving CBD had their seizures reduced by 45.1 percent.

This is because there are powerful anticonvulsant properties in CBD which work on different targets. They affect the calcium ion channels, glutamate receptor antagonists and a few other channels, as well as the neurotransmitters in the brain. Doctors were encouraged by this, actually finding that three-fourths of their patients were seizure-free during treatment.

This type of treatment has been growing throughout the US in recent years, with many medical practitioners encouraging legal access to it. Patients can benefit significantly as seizures are greatly reduced or even prevented completely. However, it’s important to remember that self-medicating must be done carefully, since the dosage is very important and too much or too little may have adverse effects. Only a little bit of CBD is really needed to see improvement.

The Benefits Of CBD

While studies are showing CBD oil can decrease or prevent seizures, remember that this is not a cure and the effects depend largely on the patient. That being said, there are some amazing benefits to using CBD for conditions like epilepsy.

CBD May Eventually Be Able To Replace Or  Reduce Anti-Seizure Drugs

If you’re against prescription drugs and all the negative side effects, CBD is a great potential replacement. It can even be used for conditions like schizophrenia since it’s an antipsychotic. Their are many stories of cancer patients using CBD oil that are looking to take a more natural route to fighting cancer and have found it to help relieve nausea, and help with appetite control.  Studies are still being conducted, but CBD is believed to help inhibit tumor growth as well.

Seizure Disorders and CBD

For seizure disorders specifically, like epilepsy, studies have shown to reduce the frequency of seizures. Even the severe forms of epilepsy such as Dravet syndrome can see some benefit. This is especially significant since the Dravet syndrome cannot be helped by traditional medications.

Since 60% of all epileptic seizures are convulsive, meaning that the body contracts involuntarily, the anticonvulsant effect of CBD oil is particularly helpful. It stops the severe and prolonged damage in the brain tissue that can occur due to seizures.

CBD may also assist in regulating the duration and frequency of seizures that result from an imbalance of the endocannabinoid system. This is especially helpful for people suffering from temporal lobe epilepsy, which causes non-convulsive seizures that disturb their senses. The CBD calms down the neurons in the brain in order to reduce both the frequency and severity of symptoms.

Status Epilepticus: CBD May Be a Potential Better Option For Treatment

The condition of status epilepticus is when people experience either convulsive or non-convulsive seizures, which last for around five minutes and occur quite often. Without immediate medical care, normal brain functions may be compromised. Usual treatment for this condition leads to some serious side effects, which is why it may be preferable to use CBD instead.

 [Exercise Caution]

Of course, you still need to be cautious with the use of CBD. Not everyone responds the same and there are actually no studies which can specifically say why CBD works better than some medications…YET. This is the main reason why it is not FDA-approved yet. Studies only show that seizures are reduced, but doctors still don’t know why this is. Even if science can’t pinpoint the reason though, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work.

As previously mentioned, be careful too about self-medicating. Doctors warn against people taking CBD oil themselves, or giving it to their children to help their condition.  Always seek quality product from companies that don’t settle for anything less than the best CBD, and always start slow and slowly ramp up to the dosage that works best for you.

I say this because, well, lets be honest their will always be greedy business men and woman more interested in making money than they are producing a quality product and even a small change in the ratio of THC to cannabidiol can change the results you get.

It’s already difficult living with a condition like epilepsy and sometimes may feel even more difficult to find proper treatment for your symptoms. Medications often cause even worse side effects, which is why many people are turning to CBD to help. CBD is not a cure for epilepsy and yet it’s been shown to have some powerful effects on seizures. If you’re looking for a treatment to help, this may be a great option.
